Concert aboard the Condor Sunset Cruise:

WHO: Pato Banton and The Now Generation

WHERE: Condor Sunset Cruise, Santa Barbara

    DATE REVIEWED: Sept. 17, 2016

Hustling past the surfers and paddleboarders on shore, I clomped up the gangplank of the Condor Sunset Cruise just as the sun sank behind the golden hills of Santa Barbara. The effort was definitely worth it. On board was fun, drinks and two hours of great music with the energetic Pato Banton and The Now Generation band.
Right away, Pato, dressed in white and wearing a white cap, connected with the audience. Selfies, hugs and pictures flourished. When the ship steamed out of the harbor the red sky was aflame with colors and the band was kicking a beat to impressive effect. Pato, full of energy and smiles, was flanked by Antoinette “Rootsdawtah” Hall, looking lovely with her heart shaped sunglasses, on keyboard.
Pato is a nimble dancer who can electrify crowds but tonight he was limited to the stern of the ship. And although the tight space constrained his moves to light shuffling, the focus shifted to his voice which is strong and full of rich British character. In no time the crowd was singing along joyously and swaying to a medley of his most popular songs like the toe tapping, “Go Pato.”
Not just a singer, dancer and band leader on par with Reggae artists like Steel Pulse, Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley--- Pato takes it up a notch. An ordained minister and reader of The Urantia Book, his belief energizes his concerts. Pato believes in a Cosmic Creator and takes Reggae to a new heights with songs that harmonize mind, body and spirit. And although the show is distinctly entertainment---the music abounds with a beat to keep your feet moving and hands clapping --- Pato’s message of “Stay Positive & Never Give In!” is spiritual sustenance that lingers long after the show.
He sailed through a joyful tour of his biggest hits – such as “Life Is a Miracle,” “Bubbling Hot” and “I Do Not Sniff The Coke” – and a brisk medley of other tunes. “The Now Generation” consists of different members who know how to let it rip. The guitarist boiled over in a virtuoso performance on his knees and the drums and guitar drew the songs out in length and inspired the crowd to sing along with Pato. Maybe James Brown would agree that Pato is the hardest working man in Reggae? Dressed in a light shirt, he was perspiring in the night air when I could have used a jacket.
Throughout the memorable two hour tour, the band provided a steady stream of rhythm to a happy crowd. The ship’s ace crew was friendly and lubricated the tour with tasty food and open bar. The friendly atmosphere added to the fun and wild cheering when, as if cued by a Hollywood director, a Harvest moon rose like a giant orange pumpkin. The effect: Priceless.
The ship pulled into dock with the audience humming tunes. I turned a corner and saw Pato sitting in a booth having a drink by himself and went over to him. I thanked him for the show and asked if I could buy the hat he wore on stage. He took it off, paused and then said with a beaming smile, “It’s yours brother.”
With the luminescent moon shining through the portal it was suddenly easy to understand his message. Pato says music is both physical and spiritual and they work in harmony to reveal a generous Creator of all things beautiful, like this night. Go Pato!
